It is a true story of how a young man follows his heart and gives up everything for the sake of travel, no matter how rough the road got. It is certainly an adventure from start to finish, from the author hitchhiking across the US, sailing the carribean, and traveling to Central America. As the author travels, you travel with him, and as he learns about how to get around, you also learn his inner life, and the knowledge and wisdom that an adventure can bring forth. It is a modern, real life, hero story. Funny, dangerous at times, Adam Ross Rapoport has captured something, and wrote about it well. I laughed, I cried, I read it without being able to put it down. I couldn't put this book down.
This guy is brave, and what's even better is that he is not only a great adventurer, but a very talented writer.
This is the kind of book where when you start getting towards the end, you don't want it to end. I enjoyed it so much, when getting towards the end you feel like you're saying goodbye to an old friend. Page turner and an absolute pleasure. When I finished this book, I thought "Auf Wiedersehen", meaning "until we meet again". Looking forward to part two.
Sometimes books, movies, music, and art can have an astounding effect on you. So much so that it literally makes you re-evaluate your belief system, purpose, and life style. Adam is authentic, courageous, passionate, and true to his beliefs and moral code. It is evident that he knows his purpose. This story that he shares makes one realize many things about themselves and the person that Adam is. In a time when social media, technology, and money are at the forefront of most peoples beliefs, Adam follows his heart. His voice is unique and he is a superb and entertaining story teller. That little voice we all have inside our heads is the voice of the book. Adam is truly the architect of his own life. Adam sublimely teaches the reader that one will never know their full potential unless they push themselves to find it. It's this self discovery that takes us to the wildest places on earth and leads us to meet someone the most unique people on the planet and Adam has done that in a remarkable way. Memory of a Vagabond is one of the most enlightening books I have ever read and will be the first book that I recommend if asked about a good book to read.
Adam is a freah, smart young man. The recollections of his travels are no doubt unique and inspiring. What a great read from beginning to end.
I actually went to high school with the author so am happy to be supporting him. The book is very interesting and hard to put down. Wish I had the courage to travel like he did/does!
Want to leave your material goods behind and hitchhike the US? You can! That's Mr Rapoport's advice to all the people he encounters on his journey who wish they had the courage to take a similar trip. For the less adventurous, you can vicariously become a vagabond reading his travel tales. I couldn't put down this memoir and I can't wait to read Part II to find out what happens to Randal, why Adam leaves Honduras for good and all the rest of the adventure. He has an honest writing style that doesn't sugarcoat himself, the trip or the people he meets. A very human tale.
